The carol "O Tannenbaum," or "O Christmas Tree," took its present form in 1824, when Ernst Anschütz wrote the lyrics for a German melody that had been floating around for some time. The Christmas tree itself has a longer and more tangled history, with many legends about its origin, including one that credits Martin Luther with first adding candles. What's better documented is the 1848 engraving in the Illustrated London News showing Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and their children around a decorated tree, which helped make the custom fashionable across Britain and beyond.
